BOWEN THERAPY

Bowen Therapy is a non-invasive technique that uses a series of gentle hand movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves, and fascia to promote relief from musculoskeletal and related neurological complaints.

Bowen Therapy is extremely gentle and is considered appropriate for anyone from pregnant women to newborn babies, the frail and the elderly. It can assist recovery from many conditions, from traumatic injury to chronic illness, depending upon each individual’s capacity to heal.

Bowen Therapy may offer relief from pain, long-term injuries and illnesses, improved health and flexibility, improved sporting performance, relaxation, and emotional and mental well-being.

Conditions that can respond well to Bowen Therapy include:

  • Back pain and sciatica

  • Digestive and bowel problems

  • Earache and TMJ problems

  • Migraines and other types of headaches

  • Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Hip, knee, ankle and foot problems

  • Menstrual and hormonal Irregularities

  • Neck and shoulder problems (including 'frozen shoulder')

  • Groin pain, pelvic tilt, and uneven leg length

  • Respiratory problems and hay fever

  • RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow

  • Sports and other traumatic injuries

How is Bowen Therapy performed?

Clients usually lie on a massage table or may be seated in a chair if required, for comfort. A 'session' involves several sets gentle but purposeful moves over various parts of the body and can be done through light clothing. Between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the client's body to begin responding.

Before the session:

The ideal time for a Bowen treatment is immediately after an injury. That way, your body can overcome the trauma before it begins to compensate for it, which can often create more problems in the long run than the initial trauma itself. If you can't get to a Bowtech practitioner immediately, the sooner you can, the better. Within three days is ideal for the quickest and most complete recovery.

For best results from your Bowen treatment:

  • Don't have any other forms of bodywork for four days beforehand

  • Avoid heavy exercise on the day of your session

  • Don't use ice or heat on the site of injury

  • Wear light-weight, loose-fitting clothing that your practitioner can work through, or be prepared to be worked on in your underclothes, under towels or blankets for modesty and comfort

What to expect following a treatment:

Bowen facilitates the body to heal itself for several days following your treatment, therefore other forms of manipulative therapy or bodywork are discouraged for up to five days after a session, as they may interfere with the efficacy of the work. You are encouraged to remain well hydrated and mobile, ensuring you get up and move regularly and avoid any strenuous activity and heavy lifting.
